Manikarneswar, North Guwahati

The ancient brick-built temple Manikarneswar in North Guwahati has a marvelous location facing the river Brahmaputra. Legend says that this is where a grief-stricken Lord Siva sat after his consort Sati’s self-immolation.

The highlights are the outline of the rock-cut sculpture of Nagraja and also Kalabhairava in an inverted position in the foothills of the temple. These sculptures need protection as they remain underwater during the monsoon and are getting eroded.
