Ambari Site situated at the centre of Guwahati city is one of the important archaeological site of North-eastern part of India and only important historical habitation settlement site representing artisans’ workshop and production centre of art activities of Assam.
As per archaeological evidences, the site represents different cultural sequence from the 2nd century B.C.E to the British period so far. The structural remains consist of a tank, drainage system, pathways, brick floors and foundation walls. The site was an atelier during the early medieval times, and many stone and terracotta sculptures of different dimensions were found at the site. These include Siva-lingas, Vishnu, Surya, Mahisasuramardini, Ganga, Yamuna etc. Kaolin pots, oil lamps, beads and ornaments were also found. These are now preserved in the the Ambari Site Museum and Assam State Museum.
